Dr. Michael Horowitz, Applied Video Compression Principal Consultant, is an internationally recognized video coding expert with over 20 years of video codec design and implementation experience who has contributed to the development and early commercialization of standards from H.264/AVC to AV1. In addition to his work at Applied Video Compression, Dr. Horowitz has worked at Google where he served as Technical Lead of the AV1 for Duo project that became the first commercially available real-time interactive video implementation of AV1. Prior to Google, Dr. Horowitz co-founded eBrisk Video and served as Chief Technology Officer until eBrisk’s acquisition by Intel Corporation in 2017. eBrisk developed high-density HEVC encoders licensed by tier 1 video conferencing and broadcasting equipment manufacturers. Before eBrisk, Horowitz led the engineering team at Vidyo that developed the first commercially available H.264 SVC video codec. Earlier, at Polycom he led the engineering team that developed the first commercially available in-product H.264/AVC video codec. Dr. Horowitz holds over 50 US patents including those for flexible macroblock ordering (FMO) and tiles, essential features in H.264/AVC and H.265/HEVC, respectively. He received an A.B. degree with distinction in physics from Cornell University, Ithaca, NY and a Ph.D. in electrical engineering from The University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. Dr. Horowitz has served on the Technical Advisory Boards of RipCode, Inc., Vivox, and Vidyo, Inc.
